Which scholarship program is right for me?

The selection is large, but one thing is common to all doctoral scholarships in Germany. They are subject to certain conditions, usually in the form of academic achievements and successes as well as non-university engagement . That’s what makes PhD scholarships so special. Scholarship programs are based on give and take between scholarship holders and scholarship providers. The specific requirements that have to be met and the type of funding offered are very different. These five criteria will help you to find a suitable doctoral scholarship .

Individual vs. structured promotion

The most frequently chosen way to the doctorate leads in Germany still over the so-called individual promotion or traditional graduation , with which the dissertation in the care of a doctor mother or a thesis supervisor is written. The course and the duration of the doctorate depends in this case strongly on the discipline, initiative and motivation of the doctoral student who independently defines, plans and implements the research project in consultation with the supervisor and also organizes its own funding. In addition, there are structured doctoral programs in so-called graduate schools or graduate colleges whose procedures are more standardized. They usually lead to a dissertation in a maximum of three to four years, but are often linked to specific projects and topics. As a rule, the attendance of a graduate school is financed by doctoral scholarships, which is why the application procedures for structured programs are inherently complex. Most research training groups are organized and funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) , whose scholarships are therefore only available to doctoral students in structured programs. For individual doctoral candidates, there are numerous other scholarship providers – from large gifted funds to small institutes to associations and church sponsors. An overview with current links can be found at the end of this article.

The major German gifted education organizations such as the CDU near Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (SPD) award doctoral scholarships in all fields of study. However, many smaller foundations and institutes are also specialized in the promotion of dissertations in specific fields. In the central scholarship databases of e-fellows and MyStipendium , doctoral scholarships can be searched for and found based on specific subjects.

Extra-university interest and commitment

In Germany, there are 13 large gift-granting organizations as well as numerous smaller foundations that support doctoral candidates with outstanding academic achievements both financially and ideologically as part of their scholarship programs. The scholarships are granted through funds from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and in particular by large political parties and church organizations . However, when applying for a scholarship at the gifted education centers and foundations, not only do special requirements apply to the quality of the doctoral project. Non-university interests as well as the personal overall picture are taken into account when awarding the scholarship. Doctoral scholarship holders are expected to volunteer and look beyond their own horizons. The gifted support organizations are committed to the professional exchange of their fellows and encourage them to take on special responsibility in society, politics, science and business . The political, social or church commitment of the scholarship holders should always be in harmony with the goals of the scholarship provider.

Under www.stipendiumplus.de , the gifted education organizations organize themselves on a common homepage. There, fellows also report on their experiences as part of individual scholarship programs. In addition, each gifted educational institution provides detailed information on its objectives, funding opportunities and conditions. The scholarship application

Applying for a PhD scholarship is usually done in multiple stages with most scholarship recipients. In a first step, the application process requires the submission of written application documents that are meaningful in terms of personal motivation and suitability as well as the actual doctoral project. Based on this, a preselection. Candidates are then invited to a (often multi-day) selection conference, during which they can prove their professional and personal qualifications. As a rule, this is done on the basis of group discussions, one-to-one interviews and written assessments .

Scholarship applications are usually expensive. Already the compilation of the written application documents takes a lot of time and also requires a high degree of self-reflection. Formulated CVs and motivation letters are an important part of every scholarship application. They should be handled with care and explicitly point out the personal experiences, goals and strengths as well as the (worthy of support) specifics of the doctoral project.

From the experience of many fellows, the effort is worthwhile immensely. Because a scholarship not only financially secure for the time of graduation. It also makes it possible to make contacts within and outside the scholarship network and to further qualify through seminars, workshops, network events and further education. Many doctoral students not only profit professionally , but especially personally from a doctoral scholarship.
